Shettleston runners show their mettle

Shettleston Harriers competed at Maryhill on Saturday 24 March and at Grangemouth the next day. The Nigel Barge 10 K on Saturday saw Thomas Fay winning in 31.55mins from club mate Lachlan Oates by 30 secs. Matthew Turner finished 4th with brother Gary in 25th position. Peter Ward was 49th with Sarah Ward finishing 80th.

On Sunday at the 46th ‘Round the House’ road race at Grangemouth Shettleston’s Tewoldeberham Mengisteab finished 2nd behind Ross Houston of Central Ac. Mike Deason was 4th with Paul Sorrie 7th. Kevin Brydon finished in 24th position.

Meanwhile, on Thursday 23 March, Emma Arbuckle, running at the Renfrewshire Schools Cross Country, came away with the gold medal to add to her recent bronze. At Balloch Park Natasha Mackay, running in the Dunbartonshire Schools Cross Country, finished 4th just getting run out for the bronze medal a couple of metres from the line.

Ciaran wins Christmas event

Ciaran Duncanson held off the fast finishing Cameron Casey, Natasha Mackay and Claire Mason to win the 2011 Christmas Handicap at the East End Healthy Living Centre (EEHLC) on Tuesday 20 December. Only 8 seconds separated the first 5 runners. Ciaran set off quickly to chase the scratch runner Eilidh Gunn, pulling away from the rest of the field to hold off Cameron Casey by 3 seconds at the finish. Ciaran collected the boys’ trophy with Cameron 2nd and Paul Simpson getting the bronze medal. The girls’ event was a close run race with Natasha Mackay beating Claire Mason by 3 seconds with Claire holding off Heather Waddell for silver medal by 1 second. Amy Harkins was the fastest girl on the night when she ran 6.11 for the course. Daniel Tolland was the fastest boy running 5.31, exactly 1 minute faster than his 2010 time.
