Willie Bain thanks everyone after retaining his Glasgow North East seat
Willie Bain was returned as MP for Glasgow North East with an improved majority. Willie, who was elected as successor to Michael Martin after the Westminster expenses scandal, wore his New Labour colours on his sleeve in his victory speech, lavishing praise on Gordon Brown.
On a turnout of 49%, Willie Bain polled 20,100 votes; Lib Dem Eileen Baxendale won 2262 votes; Jim Berrington of Socialist Labour – 156 votes; Graham Campbell, Solidarity/TUSC 187 votes; Ruth Davidson, Conservative, 1569 votes; Walter Hamilton, BNP, 798; Billy McAllister, SNP, 4158 votes; Kevin McVey, SSP, 179 votes.
