Sam Poddar takes Quarrybrae Primary pupils through a yoga class
Health education in Glasgow is looking east for inspiration thanks to a yoga pilot project run by Patanjali Yog Peeth UK Trust (PYPT), and Glasgow City Council.
The ground-breaking project will arm teachers and other staff with the skills and qualifications to host yoga classes for schools.
Glasgow-based charity PYPT hopes the Glasgow pilot, if successful, will be rolled out across Scotland.
During the last few months, PYPT master yoga teacher, Sam Poddar, has been conducting free yoga classes in schools in and around Glasgow as a pre-cursor to the pilot programme.
Thirteen schools have participated to date, involving more than 200 children.
Mr Poddar said: ‘The response from teachers and the children has been really exceptional. One of the many advantages of Patanjali Yoga is it’s a very light form of exercise. You don’t have to be particularly fit or supple, so everyone can join in.
‘With children, we work on lots of fun poses and we finish with some laughing exercises which always goes down well.’
