Glasgow Old People’s Welfare Association (GOPWA) and pupils from Rosshall Academy in Crookston prepared a festive treat for more than 50 senior citizens who would otherwise have spent Christmas day alone.
GOPWA and the pupils helped to serve up a traditional turkey lunch with all the trimmings and brought some festive cheer to the older people in attendance at the Fred Paton Day Care Centre near George’s Cross.
Guests took part in carol singing and festive games including the Nintendo Wii, which members of the centre recently raised funds to buy as a fun way to keep fit.
The pupils, aged 17, offered their free time on Christmas day after Sheena Glass, director of GOPWA, visited the school to give an insight into the lifeline the charity offers to many vulnerable older people.
Rosshall sixth-former Ashleigh Moyes said: ‘We heard about the Christmas lunch at school and there were a few of us who really wanted to volunteer.
‘We all have our families to share the day with and it’s sad to think that not everybody is that lucky. All of us really enjoyed being with the elderly people. They were so grateful and we felt good that we had helped them enjoy their Christmas day. Some of us are really keen to help out next year.’
Sheena said: ‘Christmas can be a lonely experience and that can be the case for older people who don’t have relatives close by, or perhaps can’t leave the house often due to their physical wellbeing.
‘This year we wanted to make Christmas special for some of the fantastic people who attend the charities’ day care centres and affiliated clubs throughout Glasgow. They’re all special people and we wanted to give them a cracking Christmas that they’ll never forget. ’
