Oatland community sees great potential in renovated St Margaret's

The future of Saint Margaret’s at Polmadie Road in Oatlands is becoming clearer after Glasgow Building Preservation Trust completed a study of the 110-year-old church.

The trust was asked by Glasgow City Council to report on the condition of B-listed St Margaret’s with a view to repairing it to turn it into a community and business centre.

The church, which was designed by Peter MacGregor Chalmers, is recognised for its huge architectural, cultural and social importance. Campaigners hope it will remain at the heart of a regenerated Oatlands.

So far, grant aid has been acquired to help with the design and costing of the project to the planning stage. Friends of the church are looking to secure funds for capital works and hope to see them begin in 2010 or 2011.

As community groups have driven this development so far, they hope to launch a St Margaret’s Community Working Group early next year. Members will be asked to help redesign the interior, plan social history events and lead art workshops.

The first meeting of the group will take place on Tuesday, 12 January at the Oatlands Community Resource Centre (The Blue Hut) on Wolseley Street at 7pm.
