This month, as university terms start again, colleges are well under way and schools have a mid-term break, it seems that everyone is fighting for education.
Parents in Broomhill have even gone to the highest court in the land to look for support in their argument that they should have a say in who is appointed headteacher at their children’s school. In another story the needs of workmen to part their cars while they build a new school, is impeding pedestrians and cyclists. The Steiner school is working hard to maintain its unique approach in an old building they are re-cycling for present day use.
Perhaps the legacy of losing so many primary schools at the end of the summer term is having a knock-on effect? Are more parents and people now standing up to demand that educational facilities and resources are made available, freely?
And what of the real learning that is going on in Schools? Here’s the lollipop man fasting for a day in a form of solidarity with his young charges who maintain the Ramadan discipline for a month. Then there are the St Mirren smoothies. The judges said they’d have paid real money for the primary school’s products, they were so good. Which all adds up to a happy scene with the big ones fighting to improve the quality of learning for the wee ones. Long may it continue.
